Community Partner Project
"Don't fight for slavery! Fight for Liberty! You, the people have the power-the power to create machines, the power to create happiness! You, the people have to the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure." - Charlie Chaplin
Community Partner Project
The last project in Innovations we started was our community partner project. Groups of classmates partnered together with a local business or organization. The organization would give us a problem and we would come up with a solution to present to the organization. For my my project, I was with Kendal and Clara and we were partnered with the Fishers YMCA. The YMCA is a fitness center in Fishers that is also a franchise placed all over the country. I chose the YMCA because I went there as a kid and I am also interested in Exercise Science as my major in college so I enjoy fitness and sports. The problem we were given was "How can we bring in more employees?" The Y has had some trouble getting employees so they are very short staffed. So we were to start coming up with ideas.
To start out we set up our first meeting. The YMCA partners came to the school to meet us. The meeting went very well and we actually already through out some ideas towards the end of the meeting. This gave us a great starting point. After the meeting, we began to meet with just us instead of YMCA partners. We had a few difficult communicating issues between our group but two of us got together and made a survey so we could get some information. After we received some information, I put together a little analysis and we narrowed down some our ideas, then we presented them in another meeting to our partners. After that we finally started to come up with some solutions. We met them again and they liked the ideas and wanted to to frame them stronger so we took that into consideration and made an agenda for the next meeting. We presented the final solution and they loved it.
Takeaways- Positives and Negatives
This project was good for us to do because it taught us some real world issues that businesses face to innovate and create things to forward their business. We did well coming up with real world ideas and contacted people that could help us. We also worked well with our partners. But there was some issues between our group communication. There was some struggle to fit time out of our schedules to meet up because we all work and have an avid social life. Some of us also play sports and could not show up to some things. Other than the these problems. The lessons we learned outweighed the problem.
What if we did it again?
If we did it again I would try to change the communication between myself and my group members. I would try to make sure we met up more than we did. It was a struggle to set meetings up but we did not talk about meetings as much as we needed to. We should have set up a meeting like two days a week at some point and we would have gotten some more work done. Instead we met like one day every couple weeks and this did not help us get the things we needed to get done. If I were to change anything it would be that we communicated better and also met more.
